ROME
The empire existed for 1000 years
500 BCE-500 CE
Lasted 500 years as a Republic, but it then changed into an Empire during the last 500 years
Julius Caesar ended the Republic in Rome in 45 BCE
Rome's Republic is very much similar to that of the United States's Republic
The Community
There were two different social groups in Rome
The Plebians
Rome's lower class (non-aristocratic)
The Patricians
Rome's elite class (aristocracy)
Rome began as a wealthy city-state in Italy
Suicide was highly looked down upon
People ended up "falling" on their own swords.... how clumsy!
Their Military
Built and used road systems
Placed Military Outposts along these roads
Had lots of money to provide for its growth and development
Everyone in the military spoke the same language, so their military worked better than most at the time
The Punic Wars allowed Rome to spread out
They began to have many rebellions
Used tributes throughout their land
Asked for tribute only once
Wanted either Land, Slaves, Taxes, or all three
These tributes were given to the Patricians
Roman Officials wanted to award the Patricians to keep them happy
The First Triumvirate
Gnaeus Pompey
Favored the Patricians in Rome
Julius Caesar
Favored the Plebians
Marcus Crassus
Favored both social classes, but he leaned a little more towards the Patricians
Julius Caesar declared Dictator for Life in 45 BCE
Kills Pompey and Crassus is killed in war
This date marks the end of the Roman Republic
Julius Caesar is assassinated on March 15, 44 BCE*
*Ides of March
Second Triumvirate
Octavian (Augustus Caesar)
Caesar's nephew
Marc Antony
Marcus Lepidus
Octavian changed his name to Augustus Caesar
27 BCE-14 CE
Monumental Architecture
Coliseum or Colosseum
The classic type of Coliseum (or Colosseum) that everyone imagines and that movie directors have recreated a million times
Yeah, Rome started that!
Circus Maximus
Huge dirt race track used for.... well racing of course!
Urban Planning
Aqueducts
Allowed water to flow from rivers far from Rome to Rome itself so that the people had nice and clean water to drink
Spoiler: the water wasn't nice or clean...
Pompeii
A preserved Roman city
Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried the city in ash
Central Philosophies
Patriarchal Society
Gravitas
Loyalty, Strength, and Discipline
Humanism
Every human has potential to be successful
Julian Emperors
Emperors of Rome After the Death of Caesar
Caligula and Nero
CRAZY!
They must have been drinking a little too much water!
Extremely harmful for the Empire
Decline of Rome
Lack of Gravitas among the people
Public Health began to slip
Water!
Had led poisoning in it from the aqueducts
Political Corruption
Inflation
The value of Roman money declined to a very low amount
Urban Decay
Germanic Envasions
And That Is The Life And Legacy Of The Roman Empire!
P.S. Shakespeare got his historical information for Julius Caesar from the writings of Plutarch!
